The primary 290 model for 2012 was the ST trials bike, designed for technical Trials riding and known for its precise balance.

• Engine: 272cc (marketed as 290) liquid-cooled, single-cylinder two-stroke.
• Carburetion: Equipped with a Keihin 28mm carburetor (a change from the Dell'Orto on previous models).
• Transmission: 5-speed sequential gearbox with a hydraulic clutch.
• Frame: Tubular section Chrome-moly steel.
• Suspension: New for 2012 were Tech front suspension units and a new R16V rear shock absorber system.
• Weight (Dry): Approximately 69.5 kg (153 lbs).
• Fuel Capacity: A small capacity tank, typical of trials bikes, around 2.7 liters.
